Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

In this beautiful sculpture in the round, Pericle Fazzini once again celebrates the human figure, its vitality, and its dynamism. In this case, he elegantly references the human figure, drawing inspiration from small-scale Roman bronze sculpture (of which numerous finds exist, for example from Pompeii). This type of sculpture is characterized by the exaltation of movement. Fazzini takes this concept to its extreme with a paroxysmal twist of the body and leg: a movement that is almost unnatural in its uncontrollable dynamism, yet extremely elegant, harmonious, and calibrated. The antique patina the sculptor left on the work is also striking, accentuating the reference to the original.

Pericle Fazzini was born in Grottammare in 1913.
