Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

As we can see from this portrait, Pier Antonio Gariazzo's painting style is extraordinarily modern, essentially in line with the tastes of the Belle Époque. The portrait takes into account the sensitive element, which is faithfully captured by the painter. The pictorial application, however, is complex and dynamic, with long brushstrokes outlining the figure. The artist seeks to convey the complexity of human vision in a blurred frame, rich with atmospheric vibrations.

Pier Antonio Gariazzo was a Turin-born artist and filmmaker, born in 1879 and died in 1964.
