pippo-bonanno-senza-titolo
Pippo Bonanno - Untitled

In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In Pippo Bonanno's painting, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly.

This work is part of a series of prints that perfectly reflect Bonanno's graphic style. The world presents itself as a reality to be playfully and symbolically transfigured in drawing. Bonanno's entire style hinges on a decisive and confident line in delineating shapes and volumes. But he always does so in a slightly lopsided, slightly dreamy manner, transforming reality into an imaginative game. All this is combined with the movement of a dynamic composition, with a fast-paced rhythm. Even the human body is always reduced to a pure graphic line, which, however, through its complex movement, gives the figure volumetric exaltation and physiognomic characterization, despite the lack of formal means. All this helps Pippo Bonanno bring to life his monochromatic world of subjects and iconographic themes that defy reality.

Pippo Bonanno was born in Palermo in 1923 and died in Palermo in May 2017.
