D208, 209, 210, 217.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\n The Vatican Secret Archives preserve the surviving documents of the papal investigation into the Order of the Knights Templar, held in Poitiers in 1308.\n The first three documents (208, 209, 210) constitute the surviving examples of an original corpus of 5 parchment scrolls, containing the confessions of the 72 Templars interrogated by Clement V from 28 June to 2 July 1308.\n\r \nThe long research and study works on the documentary material, started with a view to the first facsimile reproduction of the ancient parchments, revealed in 2001 the existence of a fourth parchment, (217) which was recognised as the original act of absolution granted by the plenipotentiary cardinals of Clement V to the grand master of the Temple Jacques de Molay and to the high Templar dignitaries in the castle of Chinon, where Philip IV the Fair had unlawfully imprisoned them.\n\n In addition to the parchments, a 24-leaf fascicle bound in Reg. Aven. 48 of Benedict XII has been reproduced. Drawn up by order of Clement V, it contains forty-seven rubrics, namely the extracts from the Templars' depositions contained in parchments 208-210 and 217, as well as those from nine other interrogations attested by the register alone.\n\r \nSpecial bilingual edition (Italian-English) from the Vatican Secret Archives. A world premiere, officially presented at the Vatican on October 25, 2007, to the highest Vatican authorities, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See, professors of the Pontifical Universities, and distinguished representatives of military and political institutions, associations, and professional bodies.\n\n After years of study and preparation, the Vatican Secret Archives publishes Processus contra Templarios, the unpublished and exclusive edition of the complete proceedings of the ancient trial of the Knights Templar, drawn from its sources.\r \nA unique project, \u003cstrong\u003elimited to 799 copies\u003c\/strong\u003e , curated by officials of the Pontifical Archives, containing faithful reproductions of the original parchment manuscripts preserved in the Vatican Secret Archives and a new and exclusive critical edition of the investigation documents. The renewed examination of the original parchments, carried out with the aid of a Wood's lamp, useful for recovering text sections unattainable by previous editors, has allowed the curators to amend previous editions, thus providing a more precise and authentic reading of the documents.\n\r \nCollating surviving sources has also allowed us to recover portions of text of questionable interpretation and to standardize the names of people and places. The Vatican Secret Archives thus provides scholars and enthusiasts with a valuable and scientifically reliable tool for further study of the historical events of the Order of the Temple.
