r-sorbi-senza-titolo
Raffaello Sorbi - Untitled

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

As we can see from his landscapes, Raffaello Sorbi is a painter who demonstrates a profound post-Impressionist maturity. The scenes are all created with color, applied with broad, dense strokes. Objects are skillfully synthesized with a few touches in a two-dimensional space. It is therefore the dense, material color that takes center stage, creating a landscape that tends to be lyrical and expressive rather than naturalistic.

Raffaello Sorbi (Florence 1844 – 1931) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under Antonio Ciseri. His early career was marked by a historical academicism that appealed to the public, drawing a slew of criticism, especially from those opposed to the neoclassical and romantic pictorial traditions, such as the Macchiaioli. He then changed the nature of his paintings, making them more realistic, although he continued to favor historical settings from the Middle Ages, the 18th century, and even Imperial Rome. He also painted landscapes that show strong ties with Macchiaioli compositions. In the 1870s, he was directly involved in the neo-Gothic renovation of the turreted manor known as Tenuta I Bonsi, located in Reggello in the upper Valdarno. In 1892, he also had the opportunity to try his hand at teaching, becoming a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/IMG_4940_7d1c21fa-6b92-4dd9-842d-d71cf080092b.jpg?v=1768473181
