It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.

Raffaele De Rosa's entire artistic output is aimed at creating a mythical, fairy-tale Middle Ages populated by magical knights. The artist pours his explosive imagination into his works, which finds expression in the fantastical inventions of highly original robes, vestments, and armor. This quest for a fairy-tale dimension is also expressed formally with an extremely elegant graphic line and the exploration of precious, brilliant color palettes. The formal synthesis of the subjects serves to convey a powerful sense of the archaic, further fueled by an anti-naturalistic conception of space.

Raffaele De Rosa was born in Podenzana in 1940.
