Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, which spans all eras and stylistic movements. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. For a painter whose language is imbued with realism like Renato Guttuso, the human figure is inevitably a fundamental component of his artistic production. In particular, in his pictorial, graphic, and etching works, numerous studies of the nude are dedicated to him, where, in addition to a figurative mode of representation, the Sicilian master also combines more experimental approaches to expression, as in the present work. This lithograph, as we can see from the subject, comes from the series of graphics that Guttuso created for an illustrated edition of the Divine Comedy in 1970.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n \u003cp\u003eThis work is extremely interesting because it shows us a rather unseen side of Renato Guttuso, where the Sicilian master, alongside his usual realist poetics, developed an experimental, abstract, and expressionist approach. Indeed, in this lithograph, the nude human figure is subjected to a remarkable process of synthesis for the sake of a more dramatic representation. The figures are constructed with rapid strokes that, despite their essentiality, delineate the subjects' movement and plasticity. In this exploration of physical presence, the artist, in addition to reducing the naturalistic element, also exerts significant deformations aimed at rendering the figures as suffering and tragic. This expressionism, however, remains within the confines of the Sicilian painter's realist poetics, who uses synthesis to further strengthen the truth of the suffering and tortured bodies of the damned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n \u003cp\u003eRenato Guttuso, born in Bagheria in 1911 and died in Rome in 1987, was a painter deeply involved in politics and social issues. His artistic commitment stemmed from his socialist ideals and his outrage over social injustice and abuses of power. He participated in the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti group, developing a Realist-Expressionist style of painting and developing his \"social art.\" Guttuso's most important works, expressing his neorealist art, were masterpieces such as Ficilazione in Campagna (Fucilation in the Countryside) and Fuga dall'Etna (Escape from Etna).
