renzo-grazzini-nuvolanera
Renzo Grazzini - Black Cloud

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Renzo Grazzini is a master of expressionist landscape painting. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through layering of color, diluted and transparent. The hues themselves lack much connection with reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The composition, built on overlapping chromatic zones, harks back to the essential geometries of Ottone Rosai, creating a highly evocative representation of reality.

Renzo Grazzini (Florence, 1912 – 1990). Having graduated in 1934 from the Porta Romana Art Institute in Florence, where he later taught, Renzo Grazzini was influenced by Ottone Rosai from a young age. The postwar period marked a radical shift in his art: after an early focus on geometric-abstract language, from 1953 his interest focused on neorealist syntax. Close to writers such as Vasco Pratolini, Elio Vittorini, and Romano Bilenchi, in the 1960s his research shifted toward a personal figurative expressionism. During his career, he participated in the 6th, 7th, and 8th Rome Quadrennials and the 25th and 26th Venice Biennales. His works are held in private and public collections, including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the War in Europe Museum in Washington, and the Gallery of Modern Art at Palazzo Pitti in Florence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/IMG_7283_8f89d8a8-3c23-4315-8658-471302043764.jpg?v=1768474095
