romano-fiori
Roman - Flowers

Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

Romano's pictorial language relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawing structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make room for the strength of the brushstrokes. In this work, however, we note an accentuation of the color synthesis. The rendering of the object is even more abstract, determined by broad brushstrokes representing the petals and stems of the flowers. Even more interesting is the context in which, with this formal guise, Romano conveys his perception of reality. We sense, on the artist's part, a certain desire to transfigure sensory data into a subtly dreamlike dimension, perhaps even Symbolist in nature. Romano achieves this through the chromatic range, based on intense blues, which define the work's space in a dimension slightly removed from reality. But above all, what gives this work an allusively visionary quality is the extraordinary play of light created by the artist. From the center of the work, a soft glow spreads, striking the flowers, revealing the chromatic vibrations of some and hiding others in the shadows.

As we can see from an analysis of this work, the Romano artist stands out for his highly original and compelling pictorial language, where an expressionistic use of color is toned down in a subtly symbolist vision. In this painter, the intense chromatic range and evocative use of light contribute to giving reality a subtly dreamlike quality.
