romano-stefanelli-primavera
Romano Stefanelli - Spring

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Artist Romano Stefanelli stands out for his landscape painting, in which he seeks distinctive views, imbued with a unique lyricism. Hence his penchant for picturesque views and evocative framing. Formally, this translates into a highly animated and dynamic style that ensures freshness and immediacy of execution. His brushstrokes are therefore characterized by a remarkably cursive touch, made up of sudden flickers that effectively capture the vibrations of light on objects. This is particularly evident in the depiction of flowers and in the flickers of light that reverberate across the view. The entire composition is imbued with a calm realism and a freshness deriving from the artist's technical prowess.

Romano Stefanelli (Florence, 1931 – 2016) began his artistic training at the age of 17 in Pietro Annigoni's studio, where he learned various painting and graphic techniques. In 1960, he executed a copy of a portrait of the Queen in London. Having won the 1962 National Portrait Competition in Florence, he created two tempera paintings for the Florentine church of Divina Provvidenza and, in 1967, a large fresco of the Annunciation in the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Ponte Buggianese. Critics considered the pinnacle of his prolific artistic career to be the trilogy of masterpieces created over the course of fifteen years in the church of Santa Maria di Massarella. He has exhibited his work in major Italian cities and abroad since his debut in 1968 at the Levi Gallery in Milan. Among the most important frescoes are the ceiling of the choir of the Abbey of Montecassino, the wall cycles of the churches of Santa Maria Assunta in Quarrata (PT) and Santa Maria a Massarella (FI), individual works in the churches of San Michele Arcangelo in Ponte Buggianese (PT) and Santa Maria a Torri (FI).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/PRIMAVERA_093007d7-64c1-4078-ac85-8a3ab7b2441c.jpg?v=1768473763
