romano-zaniol-madonna-con-bambino
Romano Zaniol - Madonna and Child

The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.

In his pictorial research, artist Romano Zaniol always maintains a certain expressionistic verve, but in this case it is based on a synthesis of the subject that emphasizes the elegance and essentiality of the line. It is the graphic sign that constructs the figures in a rational and minimalist manner, but, at the same time, highlights the volumes through an exploration of pure forms. The figures, thus, are subjected to a process of geometricization thanks to the line that breaks them down into angular sections and multifaceted surfaces. The color takes on clear spiritual and symbolic connotations.

Romano Zaniol was born in Cape Breton, Canada, in 1917 to Italian immigrant parents. Returning to Italy with his family after the First World War, he suffered an accident that left him permanently disabled, but which nevertheless allowed him to pursue an academic career and explore the world of art. He completed his academic studies in Milan and frequented major artists such as Giorgio De Chirico, Filippo de Pisis, Carlo Carrà, and Renato Guttuso. Poor health and limited financial resources forced him to return to his family and continue his work locally. His characteristic faces and figures testify to the transition from rural life to a modern, industrialized world. His sculptural work is expressed in terracotta and bronze works that powerfully convey this same experience.
he died in 1989 in Montebelluna.
