He briefly attended night school at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, but was forced to abandon it to continue his father's work, a majolica craftsman, even after his father's death. From about twelve to twenty-seven years old, he worked as a ceramist, but while he loved this work, his great passion remained painting, to which he devoted himself in his spare time and often even at night. Despite not having earned any academic qualifications, he taught at the Institute of Fine Arts in Benevento for many years, until 1973.
