The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.

This series of works clearly demonstrates the various components of Salvatore Emblema's artistic language. For this artist, the use of a medium like raw canvas is crucial, a key element of mechanical production, which leads to the rejection of traditional support in favor of an object evocative of contemporary society. In the case of these etchings, printed on paper, raw canvas is referenced, its irregular and coarse texture also being reproduced in the print, an essential element of Salvatore Emblema's artistic practice. This texture is overlaid with a pictorial gesture that can be traced back to the aesthetics of Informal Art.

Salvatore Emblema (1929-2006). He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His artistic research was influenced by Spatialism, which focused on the intervention of reality into the artwork and the use of raw materials such as clay and canvas. His experience in the United States was crucial, adding two other essential elements to his style: Pollock's freedom of creative gestures and Rothko's balance and chromatic fades.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/Senza-titolo-1-3_7bbc5cb4-9ceb-4041-9e6b-80969661a290.jpg?v=1768406799
