salvo-lombardo-al-lago
Salvo Lombardo - At the lake

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Salvo Lombardo, in his artistic production, reworked the genre scene in a grotesque and caricatural vein. He invented a world populated by charming characters with highly accentuated facial features, depicted in a wide variety of poses and situations that can border on the surreal.

In Salvo Lombardo's works, the fundamental component is an objectivity rooted in a "magical realism" that straddles the everyday and the surreal. The artist has constructed his own pictorial world along this path, interpreting the exaltation of plasticity typical of objective figurative languages in a decidedly sarcastic and grotesque manner. Thus, his works are populated by his unmistakable plump characters and caricature-like faces, and the dryness of his style, which would normally create a cold, metaphysical atmosphere, is completely tempered by this cartoonish aesthetic, the rounded volumes, and the fantasy of the narrative. Everything then becomes a vivid representation of the joy of living and the happiness in small things, where even the ever-present irony is indulgent and free of moralistic pretensions.

Salvo Lombardo was born in 1948 in Favara, a small town in the Agrigento province. In 1960, his family moved to Caltanissetta, where the maestro lives and works, while maintaining close ties to his hometown. With art in his DNA—his father was a master mandolin player—he was captivated by the Valley of the Temples, a fascination he lost in the enchanting enchantment of timeless art. Born with paintbrushes in hand, capable of painting and coloring from an early age, he developed an early passion for classical painters. With colored chalks, given to him by his uncle, an elementary school teacher, he endlessly drew saints, Madonnas, and cartoons on the sidewalks. Raised to respect the life and freedom of others, in the heated years of 1968 he began to travel and take an interest in politics, while also dedicating himself to the study of classical painters.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/E692F896-3423-4914-ABEB-936729B26BBF-scaled.jpg?v=1768475591
