salvo-pastorello-senza-titolo
Salvo Pastorello - Untitled

Sicilian-born artist Salvo Pastorello is the protagonist of a highly original pictorial production poised between abstract and figurative. This exploration is rooted in his life experiences, which led him to move to China in 2011. Here, in a small village on the outskirts of bustling Shanghai, he experienced the atmosphere of the Eastern metropolis, which has influenced his work. The protagonists of his paintings are characters constantly on the move, on foot or by bicycle, small figures wandering through a universe of signs. From ideograms of Eastern languages to the logos of Western multinationals, Pastorello's characters are constantly on the move, forced to choose paths amidst the symbols of a globalized world, where diverse cultures intermingle, compelling them to set out on a journey.

The pictorial language used by Salvo Pastorello in composing his works and developing his poetics lies somewhere between abstract and figurative. His walking characters are concrete, yet drawn with an illustrator's verve and a healthy dose of irony revealed in a synthetic, almost cartoonist-like style. The space in which they move is completely abstract. The scene is decontextualized and inhabited by the symbols the artist proposes in each work as stages in the journey of his subjects. In this case, we find ourselves in a labyrinth of signs that harks back to the oriental influences of his Shanghai. But the ideograms proposed are incomprehensible, hermetic, and ambiguous in their representation (some signs seem to want to take on the appearance of human bodies). Pastorello creates this highly personal alphabet with a calligraphic style that harks back to the most illustrious examples of informal sign art (how could we not think of some of Mark Tobey's calligraphic works).

Salvo Pastorello was born in Noto in 1952. Starting in the 1970s, he began exhibiting nationally and, starting in the 1990s, in other countries as well. His first solo exhibition was held in China in 2010. He also exhibited at the 2011 Venice Biennale. He currently divides his time between Peschiera del Garda and Shanghai. His works are held in private collections and public institutions in Europe, America, and Asia.
