saverio-seassaro-margherite
Saverio Seassaro - Autumn Daisies

Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscapes. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a means of interpreting reality. In addition to his famous Ligurian landscapes, Saverio Seassaro also distinguished himself in another highly classical genre: floral composition.

In this work, we can appreciate how, even in his depictions of flower vases, Saverio Seassaro's style is based on a perfect expressive balance between naturalistic rendering and coloristic synthesis. Indeed, the figure of the flower vase appears in all its naturalness and authenticity, thanks to the artist's flawless technique, which manages to depict every detail with vivacity and a sense of plasticity. The flowers appear vibrant with life, thanks to a brilliant polychrome of harmonious and balanced colors. The figure's surface is shaded in the light, thus appearing vibrant with life. At the same time, however, the artist achieves a marked formal synthesis: the structural brushstrokes exert a remarkable synthesis on the subject, constructed through dense brushstrokes of pictorial matter.

Saverio Seassaro was born in Genoa in 1917 and passed away in 2016. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa, later dedicating himself to painting and decoration. From 1946, he studied in Nervi at the Torre Gropallo. A landscape painter, faithful to the precise depiction of his subject, he devoted himself primarily to seascapes (Nervi, but also Bogliasco, Boccadasse, and Camogli), as well as depicting the streets of old Genoa. His works are housed in the headquarters of the Province of Genoa and in the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. He participated in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad and, in 1973, was awarded the Knight's Cross for Artistic Merit by the President of the Republic.
