sebastiano-de-albertis-senza-titolo-2
Sebastiano De Albertis - Battle of Montebello

The subject of battle is present throughout the history of Western art and beyond. We have evidence of it as far back as the mosaics of ancient art, such as the famous Battle of Issus preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Executed for celebratory, historiographical, or narrative purposes, battle paintings remained popular until the 19th-century historical painting of Romantic culture. The Milanese artist Sebastiano De Albertis was a painter specialized precisely in battle scenes. His artistic commitment corresponded, in fact, to his civil commitment, as he was a constant protagonist in the Risorgimento uprisings and the wars of independence. For this reason, the military and patriotic genre was always at the center of this painter's research. In this specific case, this work, as can be seen from the background, depicts the Battle of Montebello (1859).

The painting is a beautiful example of historical painting that showcases all the distinctive features of the Romantic and Risorgimento eras. The painter creates a scene that is simultaneously didactic and dynamic. The aim is to clearly convey a historical event, giving it a certain epic and solemn resonance, while simultaneously making the depiction dynamic and vigorous. For this reason, the composition is highly theatrical, full of excited and vigorous gestures, expressing the protagonists' heroism. Pictorially, the work still adheres to the canons of the Romantic era, yet in this work, as in other works by Sebastiano De Albertis, we find a more concise and immediate approach. From this perspective, the painting is particularly interesting as it demonstrates the strong influence of the Scapigliatura movement, even on a painter of historical and didactic themes like De Albertis. The touch is rapid, and the subjects are depicted with great personality and freshness, almost like a sketch. The space is practically decontextualized in the confusion of an atmosphere full of dust and excitement.

Sebastiano De Albertis was a Milanese painter, born in 1828 and died in 1897. His artistic career was shaped by his training at the Brera Academy, where Roberto Focosi and Gerolamo Induno guided him towards painting with historical and civic engagement. After participating in various insurrections and battles, in Milan's cultural milieu he became close to the Scapigliatura group. In 1880, he painted "The Charge of Pastrengo," exhibited at the Carabinieri Historical Museum. In 1887, he painted "Military Scene," exhibited at the Cantonal Art Museum in Lugano. Shortly before his death in 1896, he painted the portrait of Cavaliere Francesco Ponti, now housed in the Art Collections of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan.
