sebastiano-milluzzo-piazza-duomo-con-il-liotro
Sebastiano Milluzzo - Piazza Duomo with the liotro

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Sergio Manfredi's city views, however, the everyday aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a city setting.

In this view of Catania, Sebastiano Milluzzo presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate impressionistic rendering of sensory details achieved through lithography. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of the city's reality and the everyday life of simple life. On the other, his refined painting technique and diluted color allow him to convey a sense of immediacy to the panel, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on the objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows.

Sebastiano Milluzzo (Catania, 1915 – Catania, 2011). His intense artistic activity brought him to public attention as early as the 1930s; in the 1940s, he combined painting with teaching, until 1982. He was also a graphic designer and set designer, creating installations for both theater and opera. At the height of his career, he took part in several contemporary art exhibitions: he participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan in 1941 and the Venice Biennale in 1948. He was also invited to participate in two consecutive editions of the National Quadrennial of Art in Rome, in 1948 and 1951 (the fifth and sixth editions, respectively). In 1956, he opened the Galleria Sicilia Arte in Catania, where, in addition to his own works, he exhibited the works of young emerging artists. Two years later he founded the magazine Sicilia Arte, which was published until 1964, when it ceased publication due to lack of funds.
