serghei-raugi-campagna
Serghiej Raugi - Campaign

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The style of artist Sergei Raugi is characterized by a fully mature, post-Impressionist approach. His compositions are all constructed through color, and his brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape or the clown (another favorite subject), but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, breaks down the space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, squashed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette, in this case tending toward gray.

Sergio Raugi, also known as Serghiej, was a painter from Livorno, born in 1936 and who passed away in 2013. He was known as the "circus painter" for his sincere passion, which developed during his time in the picturesque world of the great post-war circuses. This passion was expressed through many of his paintings, often centered around the figure of the clown. Self-taught, he painted his first canvases in 1954, achieving his first success with the national Marina di Ravenna prize. He soon established himself in a group exhibition held at the Galleria D'Urso in Rome. An exhibition was held in the center of the Circo Orfei. His works were subsequently exhibited widely in Italy and Europe.
