sergio-putatti-natura-morta
Sergio Putatti - Still Life

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.

Sergio Putatti's painting is an investigation of volumes and geometric shapes. Objects are stripped of any tangible characterization to be synthesized into pure forms. The expressive means used to accomplish this are familiar: dense, textured color and accentuated gestures. However, the painting is complex, characterized by a pictorial quality charged with existential tension. This is particularly evident in the definition of space, vibrant with gestural brushstrokes. The juxtaposition of colors lends a certain expressionist edge. Cézanne's contribution is crucial in the structural investigation of the subjects, conducted through the complexity of brushstrokes.

Sergio Putatti, born in Follonica in 1939, began his artistic career in the late 1960s, when he debuted as a figurative expressionist painter, exhibiting primarily in Turin and Milan. In the early 1970s, after a period of reflection and research, he shifted his focus to spatial and conceptual issues, exploring developments in contemporary art. In the early 1980s, however, he explored new interests in design, stylistics, and photography. As a photographer, he focused primarily on film and experimental theater. Today, with a renewed interest in painting, he develops new content and techniques in cyclical works, some of which are large-scale. We highlight his works and an entire room dedicated to him in the rich and exciting modern art collection of the Fondazione Calderara, a Renaissance house-museum on Lake Orta.
