silvio-crespi-cristo
Silvio Crespi - Christ

The iconographic subject of Christ has ancient origins and is connected to the legend of Veronica. The episode in which Christ's true features were imprinted on a cloth used by a woman to wipe his face is also recounted in the Gospels. This woman was identified as Veronica, likely due to the similarity with the Latin words "Vera Icon." Since the early Christian era, the face of Christ has been the object of particular veneration. Its depiction has spanned the entire history of Western art. From the first iconic representations of the early Christian and early Middle Ages, we have gradually evolved to increasingly naturalistic (starting from the Renaissance) or realistic descriptions (typical of Flemish art). Particularly notable in the context of our painting is that Christ is depicted holding a lantern, a rather unusual iconography that undoubtedly has a symbolic reference to revealed Truth.

The painter Silvio Crespi's style is based on a perfectly naturalistic rendering of his subjects, which he achieves through a refined pictorial technique. However, his vision of the world is, expressively, more simplified than the sensory data. Through this simplification, Crespi's works emerge into an almost dreamlike dimension, undoubtedly poetic and spiritual given the subject matter. This is also evident in his use of bright colors, which do not fully respect the natural setting and must be interpreted emotionally. Truly evocative is the creation of a coherent nocturnal atmosphere, in which the light of the lantern carried by Christ bursts.

Silvio Crespi was born in Busto Arsizio in 1937, where he lives and works. His paintings are essentially figurative, yet he seeks to reveal a poetic and spiritual dimension even in the most realistic scenes. He does so primarily through the use of color, which, for Crespi, also has a symbolic meaning.
