simeon-gonzales-cavallo
Simeon Gonzales - Horse

The depiction of animals in art has ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In this work, Simeon Gonzales focuses his research on the figure of the horse. A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. From the fourteenth century onwards, its presence has been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for painters, representing it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering has always been a challenge.

The work in question is certainly exemplary of the majority of Simeon Gonzales's oeuvre. In his research, sensible reality is subjected to a mechanical reconstruction that draws essentially on Picasso and Cubism. The most interesting aspect is that, in his mechanomorphic figures, Gonzales manages to combine aspects of both Analytical Cubism (in the geometric decomposition of subjects in a complex space) and Synthetic Cubism (in the accentuated abstraction of figures, reduced to a set of lines and geometric shapes). Simeon Gonzales's post-Cubism echoes the fantastical geometries of Paul Klee, yet his pictorial style has a decidedly more fluid feel, made up of sinuous lines that temper the purely mechanical aspect of his subjects. But above all, in their totemic appearance and in the choice of a consistently bright color palette, Simeon Gonzales's figures convey a pre-Columbian and South American influence that makes this artist's works truly unique.

Simeon Gonzalez Ayquipa was born in Cusco, Peru, in 1973. Orphaned early in life, he found comfort, solace, and hope through his paintings. As an adult, he became an art prodigy, an artist who has won awards, honorable mentions, medals, and diplomas for his work. His life is the realization of a dream, his successes the rewards of a lifetime of sacrifice. From his humble beginnings as a young urban artist, through an academic education, he has become a celebrated artist whose renowned paintings are exhibited not only in Peru, but also in Asia, America, Canada, and Europe.
