simone-butti-senza-titolo
Simone Butti - Untitled

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The artistic output of painter Simone Butti also stands out for his excellent portraiture, which characterized his early, more classical, stylistic phase. His portraits are based on a completely naturalistic rendering of volumes and facial features. In this sense, we can see how Butti's language leans toward a certain realism in depicting every detail in an absolutely truthful manner. This artist's distinctive style lies in his technique, which relies on a layering of color using a moving hatch. This imbues his subjects with a warm dynamism that makes their surfaces alive and vibrant. Also consistent with this conception of portraiture is his color palette, which seeks out light tones, also thanks to the use of pastel, and which convey a sensation of softness to the touch.

Simone Butti (1912–2002, born in Brescia, but originally from the Como area). His debut dates back to the early 1940s, with works marked by a naturalism close to the canons of the Novecento group, but interpreted through a chiaroscuro atmosphere and a suffused luminism. After the war, Butti's style began to change, and a long evolution led him, after various experiments and studies, to develop a calm and rigorous abstraction, yet not devoid of energy and dynamism: a painting that does not represent visible reality, but takes inspiration from it and sublimates it in infinite variations of basic geometric and chromatic elements. It is an elegant and poetic "music of forms," merging multiple models: from the influence of the Como artists Rho and Radice to the Concretism of the 1930s, from early twentieth-century sources to Futurist aeropainting.
