The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The style of artist Ivan Stefanek is typical of the Yugoslavian naive school, of which he is one of the leading exponents. The naive artist is by definition self-taught, or almost so, someone who has not attended an academia but has found inspiration within himself. Stylistically, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with childlike and unconsciously primitivist overtones. However, even the naive artist, in his spontaneity, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a very specific aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism. As we can see in this work, the process of simplifying reality is applied to a peasant world, guardian of the primary values that naive painting seeks to extol. Furthermore, from a formal perspective, Stefanek's style transfigures reality into a fairytale dimension. The images, formed by pure lines and colors, enhanced by the glass support, become iconic, pervaded by a mixed sense of the archaic and the magical that, indeed, we can find in fairy tales.

Ivan Stefanek was born in 1942 in Hrastosvko. He was a professional merchant. He has been painting since 1965. He began painting on masonite and canvas, but when he first saw Ivan Generalic's paintings, he decided to paint on glass. He received his first lessons from Ivan Lackovic and Dragan Gazi. Over the past thirty years, he has painted over 800 paintings and has exhibited in several solo exhibitions and over 100 group shows both in Croatia and abroad. Ivan Stefanek belongs to the Hlebine School circle, and his main subjects are landscapes with streams, birds, and other animals. They are images of a nature that no longer exists, of a pure and genuine peasant world, which he still remembers from his childhood.
