sylvia-lefkovitz
Sylvia Lefkovitz - Mother with child

The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.

The artwork is inspired by the sculptural work of Sylvia Lefkovitz, whose artistic style combines a naturalistic representation of the human figure with a complex elaboration of great contemporary sensibility. Indeed, as we can also see in this "Maternity," the representation is constructed with a highly dynamic, synthetic line, and the graphic line is combined with light washes that define the shadows in a highly expressive manner. The final result is an image that is simultaneously concrete, defined in its almost sculptural plasticity, yet dynamic, shaken by intensely existential vibrations.

Sylvia Lefkovitz (August 29, 1924 – April 21, 1987) was a Canadian artist known for her murals, oils, drawings, lithographs, and sculptures in bronze, silver, marble, and Canadian wood. Among her most notable works are the bronze choir, commissioned for Mies Van der Rohe's complex in Montreal's Westmount Square; the Fathers of Confederation, created for Canada's centennial in 1967; the eighty-figure Divine Comedy, purchased by the Canadian government and exhibited in the Sala Dante of the Palazzo Reale in Milan on the occasion of Dante's seventieth birthday; and the eight bronze bas-relief biblical panels, inspired by Ghiberti's bronze doors on the Baptistery in Florence.
