tarantola-donna-con-uccellino
Laura Tarantola - Woman with a Bird

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This portrait is highly illustrative of Laura Tarantola's artistic language. The artist always straddles the line between unfiltered realism and a kind of idealizing symbolism. While the subject, as is typical in Laura Tarantola's art, is a concrete figure, in portraying it the painter exerts anti-naturalistic forces that simplify the figure, making it more iconic and symbolic. In this work, Laura Tarantola uses a very light line, full of nuances that lend dynamism to the painted surface. The artist's skill and refined perception are evident when, with just a few stylized strokes, she manages to convey a subject with her own physiognomy and personality into the painting. The facial features are typical of Laura Tarantola's female figures, with narrow eyes, a long nose, and a large mouth, outlining the archaic strength of popular expressionism.

Giuseppina Laura Tarantola was born in Rome, where she lives and works.
