tintori-bassa-versilia
Bruno Tintori - Lower Versilia

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters throughout history. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In this specific case, the artist's chosen subject is a small seaside village, made up of small houses inhabited by humble people. For a Livorno-born painter like Bruno Tintori, it is a type of view that draws on a strong landscape tradition in Tuscan painting. A tradition perpetually seeking lyricism in images of simple life and everyday life through a post-Impressionist depiction of rural or seaside landscapes. This tradition obviously has its roots in the Macchiaioli group in the second half of the 19th century, but it would find continuation and lifeblood in the painters who, in the early decades of the 20th century, worked in the Livorno and Versilia area, forming the so-called Gruppo Labronico. Tintori's poetics draws on this tradition, developing its themes with his own personal style.

The artist Bruno Tintori developed a coherent and highly recognizable stylistic register in his paintings, based on a pronounced synthesis of subjects in delicate polychrome surfaces. The present painting is a typical example of Bruno Tintori's landscape painting. The small group of houses in the seaside village is transformed by the artist into an exquisite harmony of colors. To achieve this result, he first empties the objects of their materiality, flattening them onto the surface. The representation of the houses, however, does not lose its vitality, because it is executed with a thick, black, highly animated line that imbues the objects with existential vibrations. The resulting fields thus become the space in which the painter can develop his light washes of color, which fade in the light, painting the walls of the houses in pale peach tones. The chromatic area of the houses, within the overall composition, is perfectly balanced with the blue of the sea below and the azure of the sky above.

Bruno Tintori was a painter from Livorno, born in 1917 and died in 1991. He worked primarily in Lido di Camaiore. He trained first in Bologna and later in Milan, where he studied under the master Gaddi. In addition to his study of Lido di Camaiore's landscape tradition, his experience in Granada, Spain, was crucial in defining his style. Inspired by the colors of the Alhambra, he developed his signature polychrome textures using the so-called Hispano-Moresque technique. A well-known painter, he exhibited his work in numerous national exhibitions.
