tiziana-pers-wild-horses-3
Tiziana Pers - Wild horses 3

The depiction of animals in art has ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true portraits from life, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. Tiziana Pers's artistic research focuses on the figure of the horse. A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for painters, depicting it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering has always been a challenge.

The work was created with an extremely elegant graphic technique. The figures are outlined with a thin line that identifies and describes them in every detail, both physiognomic and volumetric. The plasticity of the figures is further enhanced by the hatching that highlights the shadows on the subjects. One can notice a certain tendency to elongate the figures' proportions, a very recurring feature in depictions of horses. Indeed, the tapered shape of the faces is particularly effective in conveying the idea of the dynamism inherent in this animal's characteristics. Nevertheless, it can be said that this ink drawing by Tiziana Pers is a perfect execution of a life drawing.

Tiziana Pers (1976), visual artist and activist, focuses her research on animal rights and the parallels between different forms of discrimination and domination.
