tullio-pericoli-senza-titolo
Tullio Pericoli - Untitled

The depiction of animals in art has ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In this context, the artist Tullio Pericoli focuses his research on the figure of the horse. A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for painters, it has always been a challenge to represent it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering.

In this beautiful ink drawing, artist Tullio Pericoli reworks the subject of the horse, subjecting it to his boundless creativity as an illustrator. The artist creates an almost surreal vision of the animal, somewhat reminiscent of Salvador Dalí in its excessive swelling of volumes and the breakdown of the subject into distinct biomorphic organisms. But Tullio Pericoli lacks the Catalan master's visionary and apocalyptic quality; everything has a playful quality, even with a certain dose of caricatural irony typical of this artist. The formal care of the work remains extraordinary, in the precision of the drawing and in the application of the ink to create the compact, plastic volumes that compose the horse. In this sense, to give a concrete character to an obviously imaginary representation, Tullio Pericoli uses the interplay of shading with great refinement and technical expertise.

Tullio Pericoli was born in Colli del Tronto in 1936. He is a prominent painter and illustrator. He enrolled in the Faculty of Law at his family's behest, a course of study he didn't feel was his own, and he abandoned it at the age of twenty-five, moving to Milan, where he established himself as a painter and illustrator. From the 1970s onwards, he exhibited his work in Milan, Parma, Urbino, and Ivrea, and began collaborating with the magazine "Linus," "Corriere della Sera," and "L'Espresso." Tullio Pericoli's artistic output is distinguished by his landscapes, suspended between reality and fantasy, in a magical vision inspired by the Marche countryside, and by his portraits, which blend illustrative verve with caricature.
