ugo-caggiano-senza-titolo
Ugo Caggiano - Untitled

The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," meaning to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images. Ugo Caggiano was a master of Italian abstraction. In his pictorial vision, the artist transfigured reality into a magical and imaginative geometry. Among his most recurring subjects are depictions of small villages, of which this work is a beautiful example.

In Ugo Caggiano's abstract language, phenomenal reality is reconstructed through elegant geometric stylization. Thus, with the refinement found in some of Paul Klee's compositions, a landscape is transformed into a balanced system of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines, quadrangular and triangular shapes. The magical quality of Ugo Caggiano's abstract art is therefore very close to that of the Swiss master, yet in Caggiano, a fairy-tale feel prevails, given his somewhat lopsided and dreamy manner of tracing his geometries. Furthermore, in the Marche-born painter, stylization is much more pronounced, and the composition is resolved with very few lines and a slender graphic style that accentuates the work's symbolic, and therefore enigmatic, nature. Other fundamental components for Ugo Caggiano are color and texture. From a chromatic standpoint, his works always present a perfect balance, achieved through the juxtaposition of a few colors. As for the material, however, Caggiano's playful side is also expressed in the variety of perceptual stimuli given by the use of different materials and consistencies.

Ugo Caggiano was born in Petriolo in 1941. A former professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, he participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions and created a series of relief clocks for the Recanati-based company Rede Guzzini. Some of his works are exhibited in prestigious private collections and various museums, including the Dunkirk Museum (France), the Remo Brindisi Museum (Lido di Spina, Ferrara), and the Sapone Foundation (Caserta).
