vangelli-senza-titolo-2
Antonio Vangelli - Untitled

Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus artist, or mask began to gain popularity, as they were instrumental in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. For example, we can cite the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown. The cycles dedicated to the circus and masks are among the most famous of Antonio Vangelli's work.

In these subjects of clowns and circus performers, Antonio Vangelli developed his original, expressionist and minimalist language. The characters are always arranged in a row, side by side, in a two-dimensional, decontextualized space. Typical of Vangelli's expressionism is the elongated, threadlike appearance his characters take on. This gives his works a distinct vertical tension. But it is above all in the line, which varies from work to work, that Antonio Vangelli's creativity and inner vision are expressed. In this painting, for example, the three masks are constructed with a very marked and sinuous line that sketches the figures with whimsical flourishes. The brushwork is consistently dense and thick, as are the color combinations, which are unpredictable and deliberately dissonant.

Antonio Vangelli was born in Rome in 1917 to a noble family, and passed away in 2004.
