Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Vincenzo Irolli is a typical representative of the Neapolitan school of painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, drawing major influences from Domenico Morelli and the Palizzi brothers. This style of painting fundamentally emphasizes a complete naturalistic rendering and impeccable technical quality, the fruit of a high level of academic training. This, however, does not prevent him from embracing new pictorial techniques and a more modern approach to artistic creation. His strokes are rapid and cursive, more concise and suited to giving the work a fresh and immediate character.

Vincenzo Irolli was a Neapolitan painter, born in 1860 and died in 1949.
