virgilio-marchi-senza-titolo-2
Virgilio Marchi - Untitled

This work is part of a very interesting collection illustrating Virgilio Marchi's architectural work. It consists of a series of technical drawings of interiors, both for offices and private homes. The interest is primarily aesthetic, relating to the design and furnishing choices, the arrangement, and the design of the furniture.

From a formal perspective, however, the decidedly technical nature of these drawings is highlighted. The interiors are created as perfect spatial boxes, built on rigorous angular perspectives. The entire drawing is characterized by clean, pure lines, yet there is no lack of taste in the lively description of details. Even the application of color tempers the projectual nature of the work, allowing for a greater freshness of execution.

Virgilio Marchi (Livorno 1895 – Rome 1960) was a set designer and architect. A leading figure of the second Futurist movement and one of Italy's greatest set designers, Marchi developed a close friendship with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti from a young age, designing a villa for him in Capri in 1927. His designs represent the perfect synthesis between the architectural and urban planning culture of avant-garde artists such as Antonio Sant'Elia and Mario Chiattone, and pure formal research. In 1925, he renovated the Odescalchi Theater, equipping it with a modern electrical system, the Casa d'arte Bragaglia, and the Teatro degli Indipendenti, and then developed the restoration project of the ancient Roman baths on Via degli Avignonesi. In 1929, he designed sets and costumes for two operas by Gioachino Rossini, L'italiana in Algeri and La cenerentola; In 1930 he began his collaboration with Lamberto Picasso's Company, and then published Italia Nuova in 1931. In 1934 he participated in the Volta Conference, organized by the Academy of Italy, and between 1948 and 1952 he designed the Odeon Cinema in Livorno, now substantially demolished.
