vitali-velasco-vele
Velasco Vitali - Sails

The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which led to the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material with which they compose their works. Velasco Vitali's work is also inspired by Informal art, albeit in a wholly original interpretation.

The painter Velasco Vitali's style is grounded in a highly synthesised process that leads him to abstract phenomenal reality to the point of achieving results that can be ascribed to the poetics of Informal Art. This is evident in these "Sails," in which the artist, even through the title, still leaves a trace for the viewer to maintain a connection with the subject, but the execution is entirely resolved in a powerfully expressionist and abstract manner. The absolute protagonist is the pictorial gesture, which, together with the dense color, becomes the artist's primary means of expression. Thus, the faint trace of perceptible reality, which can still be discerned in an almost elusive horizon where the pointed forms of the sails stand out, is fully identified with the painter's gesture expressed in broad brushstrokes. The same is true for the atmosphere and the reflections on the water's surface: everything is transfigured into the expressive power of pure pictorial matter, thanks to Velasco Vitali's skill in modulating it and making it chromatically dynamic. Also fundamental to this perceptive exercise is the interpretation of color, which transcends the sensory to settle on purely emotional and spiritual tones.

Velasco, son of painter Giancarlo Vitali, was born in Bellano in 1960. He began his self-taught career in the late 1970s, working in graphics, drawing, and painting. In 1986, the Compagnia del Disegno in Milan held his first solo exhibition, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. In 1987, he exhibited at the Galleria Altair Nuova in Lecco, and Marco Vallora organized a solo exhibition of his work at the Galleria La Sanseverina in Parma. In 1989, he exhibited at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Conegliano and the Galleria dello Scudo in Verona, in a solo exhibition curated by Marco Goldin. In 1991, he exhibited at the Galleria Davico in Turin and in Conegliano with Paesaggi Italiani, an exhibition later repeated in Sciacca at the former Convent of San Francesco. That same year, he was invited to the group exhibition Ritratto at the Castello Estense in Mesola and the Castello Svevo in Bari. In 1996, he was among the winners of the Michetti Prize and was invited to Pitture at the Casa dei Carraresi; in 1997, the Galleria Forni in Bologna dedicated a solo exhibition to him, Viaggio, presented by Enzo Fabiani. In the late 1990s, Velasco participated in several group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 2000, important collaborations continued: in addition to solo stands at Arte Fiera in Bologna and Miart in Milan with Galleria Forni and Galleria Antonia Jannone of Milan, Velasco was present at foreign exhibitions such as the Salon de Mars in Geneva and Artexpo in Barcelona. Two major public exhibitions, curated by Italian Factory, were organized at Palazzo Belmonte Riso in Palermo in 2004, and at Palazzo della Ragione in Milan in 2005.
