volturno-morani-padre-pio
Volturno Morani - Padre Pio

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. Specializing in religious subjects, artist Volturno Morani in this work presents a portrait of Padre Pio of Pietralcina.

This work is an extraordinary example of Volturno Morani's innovative genius and his poetics, defined as Neoconstructivism. In his work, this artist exalts the sanctity of religious subjects in a completely new and original definition of sacred art. In this context, Volturno Morani's use of light and color to create an image of elevated aesthetic and spiritual value is emblematic, as is his work. The artist begins with a figurative language, but it is completely transfigured by color, whose brilliance is essential to achieving the final result. This is achieved through a highly specific use of enamel colors, developed through Volturno Morani's research. In this way, the figure's plasticity is enhanced in a geometric reconstruction, which also reveals a certain pop influence. Color plays a predominant role not only in defining the subject, but also in the space that welcomes it, characterized by sinuous and dynamic figures, which highlight (in a spatialism of the sacred) the spiritual forces evoked by the figure of the saint.

Volturno Morani was born in Figline Valdarno in 1932 and passed away in San Prospero in 2004. Descended from a generation of painters and sculptors, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture. He then earned degrees in architecture and theology. Among his early accolades was an extensive feature in "Cronache d'Arte," a television program edited by Alessandro Cutolo, broadcast in 1966. At the same time, he worked as an architect in various regions on behalf of various ministries, taught courses at several Italian universities, and finally worked as a freelance journalist, but never abandoned his greatest passion: painting. For over thirty years, he exhibited his works in Italy and abroad; approximately 520 of his paintings are held in churches and collections in Italy and abroad, including the USA, France, England, Japan, and Australia.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/immagine-volturnio-morani-padre-pio-scaled.jpg?v=1768471289
