The poet-monk Wandalbert von Prüm wrote the list of Holy Martyrs in verse and dedicated this poetic composition to Emperor Lothair I, who died in 855 in the monastery of Prüm. The dedication to Emperor Lothair I is therefore an ancient and precious testimony to German history. The original manuscript has been lost, and the only surviving version is the Reichenau Codex, which presents a particularly interesting layout. This codex, which belonged to the famous collection of Queen Christina of Sweden, exhibits an extraordinary fusion of the various cultural currents of the time unlike any other work in the early medieval manuscript tradition. The codex includes a discussion of the main Church holidays with a list of Holy Martyrs; Likewise, it contains important testimonies on the state of the empire and its representatives, including a splendid celebratory portrait of the Sovereign. The allegories of the months and signs of the Zodiac, in the form of enchanting full-page miniatures on a gold background, belong to an ancient iconographic tradition, while the verses dedicated to the months of the year are a precious testimony to the secular poetry of the time. Finally, in a typical medieval syncretism between proto-scientific thought and fantastic imagery, the codex concludes with an astronomical and an astrological diagram.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Camillo Alessandro","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":56210610291074,"sku":"ACAM003","price":2750.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0909\/7065\/3058\/files\/Wandalbert-02.jpg?v=1768391637","url":"https:\/\/cjfh11-ee.myshopify.com\/en\/products\/wandalbert-von-prum-scrinium","provider":"Venderequadri","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
