The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The Swiss artist Wilhelm Gimmi, in his pictorial production, has always focused on classical and traditional subjects, such as landscapes and portraits, always imbuing them with his quest for pure painting, which we can also see in this work.

Even in his watercolor work, the fundamental characteristics of Wilhelm Gimmi's pictorial style persist: the reconstruction of phenomenal reality according to a harmonious ideal of purity. Compared to his oil paintings, however, the Swiss artist's watercolor work further accentuates the presence of light that pervades all his works. As we can see, the rapid technique and diluted color of watercolor favor the tendency to dissolve objects in the light, which in this landscape becomes dazzling. Nonetheless, the painter, with his customary compositional direction, arranging the elements according to a rational and orderly vision of reality.

Wilhelm Gimmi, a Swiss painter and draftsman, was born in Zurich in 1886 and died in Chexbres in 1965. His education began at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich, continuing at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1911, he founded the Der Moderne Bund group in Lucerne together with Hans Arp, Walter Helbig, and Oscar Lüthy. In his pictorial research, Wilhelm Gimmi initially drew inspiration from Paul Cézanne and the Cubists for his exploration of form. Later, in a journey that saw him draw inspiration from the colors of German Expressionists Schmitt-Rottluff and Pechstein, he achieved the harmony and luminosity that distinguish his works.
