Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject chosen by artist A. Giannelli is the Testaccio Bridge. Construction began in 1938 and it was inaugurated in 1948 under the name of "Africa Bridge." Structurally, the bridge features a single arch and is constructed of travertine. Urbanly, the bridge connects Largo Gian Battista Marzi to Lungotevere Portuense, leading directly to the Testaccio and Portuense neighborhoods, two historic districts of Rome. The bridge is an essential structure within the urban planning for navigating cities crossed by rivers. While the first bridges were made of wood and stone, the ancient Romans later began building them with more durable materials, stone and brick, which still resist the corrosion of time. In Giannelli's work, the bridge becomes a key element in understanding the painting, becoming its subject. Stylistically, Giannelli's work employs a perspective and image construction that aims to be rational and linear in its representation, perhaps also due to the fact that the subject is a bridge built during the Rationalist period, in art history terms. The scene remains very rigid and well-constructed, but what is certainly striking is the artist's use of color: shades of green and yellow, with subtle hints of brown to highlight the houses. The blond Tiber sees its waters turn green. Tonally, the painter has succeeded in creating just the right depth, even in terms of shadows, thus lending character and simplicity to the scene. We have not found any reliable sources regarding Giannelli's painting career. Our research does not, in fact, provide a definitive attribution to Giannelli, but we can highlight how his painting style is extremely precise and well-calibrated.
