Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts Agathon's favorite subject par excellence: the dancer in motion. The artist treats the subject with a distinct Art Nouveau influence. His dancers stand out as figures of their era, draped in ethereal, delicate garments.
The aesthetic influences of Art Nouveau are clearly felt in Agathon Leonard's sculptures, in his diaphanous and austere female figures. In his drawings, the Art Nouveau influence is also clearly perceptible from a formal perspective. Indeed, the female figure is rendered with a clean, sinuous line, elongating the volumes in a flowing rhythm, fully in keeping with the Secessionist taste of the early 20th century. The result is a female figure that combines the concreteness of plastic exaltation with a grace and mystery reminiscent of Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist art.
Agathon Léonard van Weydevelt (1841 Lille - 1923 Paris) moved to Paris at a young age and studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris under Eugène Delaplanche. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1887 and of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1897. He exhibited regularly throughout France and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1900. His well-known works include studies of dancers, such as La Cothurne, modeled in 1895 and cast in 1900. The Scarf Game, inspired by the famous dancer Lois Fuller, was exhibited as a centerpiece at the 1900 Universal Exhibition at the Pavillon de Sèvres in Paris. In addition to bronze, Leonard also created works in marble, quartz, and ivory.
