Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. This work by Antonio Manzoni is a clear example of an Expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is practically two-dimensional, with no concession to spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate forms in a very tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality.
Antonio Manzoni always stands out for the complexity of his highly elaborate painted surfaces. The artist has developed a remarkable technique that allows him to apply dense, textured paint to the support. In some cases, this material, which takes on a truly plastic connotation, is used for informal compositions, with a tormented, strongly expressionist line. In other instances, however, Antonio Manzoni proposes more calligraphic interventions, with less vigorous gestures. In these cases, the protagonist is a slender and fragile vegetation, always represented in an informal manner.
Antonio Manzoni was a painter from Robbiate, born in 1922 and died in 1987. He attended the graphic design department of the Feltrinelli Institute in Milan, giving vent to his artistic passions. After working in various professions, he definitively turned to painting in the 1950s, beginning the long journey that led him to conquer his own artistic expression. Manzoni successfully combined an expressionist-inspired language with a complex, textured and informal pictorial approach. He had numerous solo and group exhibitions.
