Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this painting is inspired by the figure of the Virgin Mary, probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
In the style of painter Ada Massaro, a Cubist conception of artistic creation combines with a dense and extremely vibrant chromatic material. The artist seeks to explore the subject in depth, therefore she breaks it down and reconstructs it geometrically in a complex and non-unique space. This mechanical reconstruction is combined with the use of a remarkably textured paint layer. In this way, the painter replaces the static nature inherent in Cubist geometry with a more dynamic and vibrant pictorial style. From a chromatic perspective, Ada Massaro's profound research is also expressed in the definition of a coherent and unified tonality and the use of bright colors.
Ada Massaro was born in the province of Lecce in 1949, but soon moved to Switzerland and Vaumarcus. Watercolor, at first, was the easiest medium to portray the enchanting mountain and lake landscapes of her childhood. Ada Massaro then settled in Rome, where, alongside her high school studies, she attended the San Giacomo Art Institute. She subsequently undertook numerous study trips abroad. Over the years, her painting technique has been influenced by a desire for experimentation, which led her from the post-Impressionism of the 1970s and 1980s to the lyrical-geometric figurative style of the 1990s and 2000s. For over forty years, she has regularly exhibited her work in solo shows at various art galleries in Switzerland and Italy.
