Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
Salvati's interpretation of still life is resolved through a decisive process of abstraction of the subject. There is a remarkable synthesis of sensory data that empties the objects of their volume, transforming them into pure forms permeated by perceptual vibrations. Thus the artist constructs the objects, with dense brushstrokes that outline the structures in a nervous and vibrant manner. Then, the gestural application of color, especially in the representation of the space that accommodates the objects, completes the work, making everything within the composition extremely dynamic and light, yet rich in vitality. The colors have rather bright hues, ideal for capturing the intense chromatic vibrations and vivid reflections of light on the surfaces of the objects.
A. Salvati, the artist behind this painting, stands out for his highly interesting pictorial production, in which sensory data are reworked through an original expressionism of color. The artist transfers his inner self to the canvas, representing phenomenal reality through intense gestural expression.
