Description of the work
Description of the work
This work is part of a series in which the painter A. Tassi pays homage to his great masters by painting small mixed-media panels reproducing details from famous works. In the present painting, Tassi pays homage to Henry Rousseau by reproducing a detail from "The Sleeping Gypsy," an oil on canvas painting created in 1897, now exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The master copy by A. Tassi fully adheres to Rousseau's model. The work has a vaguely Symbolist feel, already due to its chosen subject matter, and also expresses an unmistakable dreamlike, surrealist vein. Formally, the composition's symbolic aura is enhanced by a synthetic representation conducted through a bold line that empties out volumes and eliminates physiognomic details. In Rousseau's works, reality, simplified, takes on magical connotations, akin to a fairy-tale exoticism. A. Tassi, the artist who created this work, is distinguished by his excellent painting technique. He practices very classical and traditional genres, especially landscapes. However, his excellent technique allows him to create compositions inspired by the great masters of the past.
