Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
The style of the painter A. Virgi, in much of his work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a lively and dramatic manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also the protagonist, conveyed through his agitated gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Virgi's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the dramatic tone of his works, namely that of favoring a marked dirtiness of the canvas. Thus, even though the subject remains comprehensible, the artist adopts a strongly expressionistic and abstract aesthetic.
A. Virgi stands out for his production of traditional genre scenes, yet recontextualized through a unique contemporary sensibility. His style is decidedly expressionist, based on a synthesis of subjects in which the pictorial material and the artist's gestures prevail.
