Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered genre scenes, which depict an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant elements. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents. In this case, the artist Tatari presents this popular subject in an interpretation in which abstract language merges with figurative art.

In this painting, Tatari breaks away from his usual figurative style to reach one of his experimental peaks, achieving a composition bordering on abstraction. In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is simultaneously charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic currents in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In this work, however, it is clear that Tatari was inspired by a Cubist-inspired decomposition of reality. The subjects, in fact, are the result of an intersection of colored planes that reconstruct reality with the geometric rationality and lively irony of a Paul Klee. The mysterious appearance of the female figure on the left confirms the magical and symbolic atmosphere of the entire scene. Indeed, the work's title itself is highly suggestive in this sense.
Abdul Rahem Tatari is a Syrian painter whose art is primarily inspired by ethnic subjects, which he depicts with the spontaneity of a naive language. In some cases, he ventures into more abstract experimentation, based on colorful geometric compositions.
