Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
Achille Dovera is an artist of extraordinary pictorial quality. He can be considered a leading exponent of 19th-century naturalist and genre painting. The work has a broad, classical feel, with this view lost in the distance through a light, aerial perspective. Formally, Dovera maintains a connection with the phenomenal reality, which is reproduced with precision, even though the role of color is fundamental. The brushstrokes are very fluid, rapid, and cursive, lending freshness and immediacy to the scene without disrupting the forms. The light, illuminating the scene with a clear, sunny glow, is crucial.
Achille Dovera was a 19th-century Milanese painter, born in 1838 and died in 1895. He was an important landscape painter, also known abroad. He trained at Brera with Francisco Hayez and participated in Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand.
