Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The drawing is extremely interesting and eloquent in demonstrating how fundamental the pursuit of formal values was to Achille Funi's artistic practice. Even in this graphic work, we can appreciate how the figure is constructed with a few lines, aimed less at anatomical description of the subject than at enhancing its plastic qualities. The figure is solid in its three-dimensionality, thanks in part to light hatching, and reflects the geometric and rational nature of Funi's art.
Achille Funi was born in Ferrara in 1890 and passed away in Appiano Gentile in 1972. He was one of the founders and most important representatives of the Novecento movement. In addition to being a painter, he was also a sculptor, architect, illustrator, set designer, and graphic designer.
