Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Adele Levi Sacerdoti can be considered, in all respects, a worthy follower of the Post-Impressionist and Expressionist avant-gardes. Like her brother Carlo, the artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a lively and vibrant manner. For this reason, the reality of a nude human figure is interpreted extremely synthetically, with a highly advanced exercise in reduction. The surface tends to be two-dimensional, conceding little to spatial depth. It is the structural brushstrokes that delineate the forms, conducting a thorough investigation of the body's plastic qualities. For this reason, the painting unfolds with a broad stroke, dense with pictorial substance.
Adele Levi, Neapolitan writer, painter, and pianist, sister of Carlo Levi, interprets reality in her paintings through post-impressionist and expressionist lens.
