Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
This work is part of a highly interesting series, demonstrating Adelio Colombo's figurative production on traditional subjects such as still lifes and vases of flowers. The composition is highly instinctive, constructed entirely through color, which definitively transcends drawing in a pronounced synthesis of the depicted elements. This execution method could be described as post-Impressionist, as the immediate capture of sensory data is combined with a strong emotional component, arising directly from the artist's sensitivity. But the most significant aspect is that this sensitivity is expressed in a truly vigorous, almost brutal, pictorial stroke, foreshadowing an Expressionist gesturality. The artist deliberately dirties the canvas, in an intense and existential perception of reality.
Adelio Colombo was born in Daverio in 1912, where he died in 1984. A student of Giuseppe Talamoni, he participated in several important events: the 20th Biennial of the Permanente in Milan, 1956-1957 editions; Painters on Holiday, Valcuvia (Varese); the National Drawing Exhibition in Lodi; the Copparo Prize; the Bozzolo Prize; Milan Today and the Lombard Cities at the Permanente; various exhibitions at the Cesare da Sesto (Varese) and group exhibitions at the Circolo degli Artisti of Varese. By invitation, he participated in the Italo-Swiss Extemporanea in Besano (Varese). He won First Prize at the Laveno Prize and the S. Remo Vetta Prize.
