Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
A specialized portrait artist, Adeodato Malatesta possesses a highly advanced painting technique that allows him to achieve a detailed, almost photographic, physiognomic precision. Malatesta is completely faithful to an objective rendering of the portrait, accurately capturing every detail, especially the face. The painter manages to convey every single wrinkle of the subject's face to the canvas, and with his loose brushstrokes, the fruit of excellent academic training, he achieves not only precision but also a fine mobility of the facial features, softly blending them into the atmosphere and achieving a greater degree of naturalness. However, the entire figure is immersed in the space of the work fluidly, without contrast, welcoming the delicate light coming from the left. The clothing, hairstyle, and above all the demeanor of this portrait, in which the subject appears ordinary, without any intention of moral or psychological contextualization, indicate this painting as a typical product of 19th-century official portraiture.
Adeodato Malatesta was a painter of Modena origins, born 1806-1891. The third of the eleven children of Giuseppe Malatesta, captain of the guards of Duke Ercole III, he showed a marked inclination for painting from childhood. Between 1819 and 1820, he had already completed several works that prompted his uncle Giacomo Guzzoni to enroll him at the Atestina Academy of Fine Arts in Modena. His education included the study of classical Greek and Roman art, as well as Leonardo da Vinci, who inspired him when practicing his art of portraying animals, plants, and flowers. Later, by studying the works of Mazzoni and Begarelli, he specialized in portraiture. Adeodato Malatesta's fame grew so much that he first secured a professorship at the same academy in Modena and later, in 1860, became director of the Three Emilian Academies. In 1866 he carried out free restoration work on the dome of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Fiorano Castle.
